Data Ownership

Q: Do you own my stories?
A: No. Your stories are your stories. Every letter that you write, every character you create, every word that you store on Seequill is your intellectual property. We will never take your content and publish it, distribute it, or sell it to any third-party such as a book publisher, literary agent, magazine, blog, etc., nor do we even have the right to do that. Your stories are all yours. Our job is to help you create them.

Data Security / Working Offline

Q: Is my data safe with Seequill?
A: We work very hard to ensure that it is. If you have an Annual Membership, your data is backed up on Microsoft Azure’s cloud servers on an encrypted database, and that database itself is automatically backed up regularly. We also use several monitoring tools and are constantly reviewing our security to ensure that, to the best of our abilities, your stories are safe with us. Seequill lets you export your entire story as well, so if you want to feel better, feel free to export as often as you’d like, and keep copies for your own safekeeping. You can export your story to a Seequill Data File, which you can then import later in case you need to restore your story.

If you are using the Free Membership or are working offline, your data is stored in your browser, and we don’t have much control over that. We recommend that you get online and back up your changes to our database as often as you can, and that you export your story frequently too, just in case something bad happens to your browser. You can export and import Seequill Data Files under the Free Membership as well.

However you’re using Seequill, we strongly recommend that you do not use your browser in private or incognito mode when using Seequill. Browsers don’t retain data reliably in that mode, so you will risk losing data if you are in private or incognito mode.


Q: Is Seequill really free under the Free Membership?
A: It really is! You’ll only be missing out on a few features, detailed in the Pricing page. The way we see it, we’re not storing your data; you are. So create an account, log on, and write as much as you want.


Q: If I’m using the Free Membership or working offline, can I close my browser or turn off my computer?
A: Yes, it should be safe to close your browser or turn off your computer. But again, we strongly recommend that you do not use your browser in private or incognito mode when using Seequill. We also recommend that you export your story frequently when you work offline, just to ensure your text is safe.

Updates

Q: How often do you update Seequill?
A: We do small updates and we do big updates. Small updates are things like bug fixes and minor enhancements, and we tend to roll those out every 2-3 weeks or so. We try to roll larger updates out every 2-4 months. Updates to Seequill sometimes require us to make Seequill unavailable for a period of time (usually never more than an hour or two), but we work super fast and will always try to get Seequill back online as soon as possible.

Troubleshooting

Q: I’m having trouble loading and/or using Seequill. What’s wrong?
A: Assuming things are working on our side, you’ll want to make sure of a couple of things:

  1. You’re using the latest version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
  2. You’re NOT in Private or Incognito mode.
